I saw close to a hundred theater/performing arts events this year, so it was quite challenging to narrow down what I thought were the best of the year, but after a lot of merciless selecting, unselecting, crossing-off, and re-adding... What were...  &lt;strong&gt;And They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers... &lt;/strong&gt;There’s a reason: Spanish playwright &lt;strong&gt;Fernando Arrabal&lt;/strong&gt;... his works’ mixture of sacrilegious and overtly sexual surreal imagery and the playwright’s unsubtle could be like an irritating migraine headache that incessantly lingers. But the brazen, passionate, destined-for-greater-things&lt;strong&gt; The Right Brain Project&lt;/strong&gt; not just embraced Arrabal in all his infuriating glory, but with a jaw-dropping, arresting, site-specific production in a tiny black box on the fourth floor of a warehouse by the Ravenswood Metra tracks, made him relevant to 21st century audiences as well. With this production, the very talented young director &lt;strong&gt;Nathan Robbel.&lt;/strong&gt;  The Right Brain Project’s startling environmental production of Fernando Arrabal’s masterpiece, And They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers, currently being staged in a suffocatingly tiny, raw, black box performance space. For me, this production is what makes the Chicago storefront scene explosive: staged for hardly any money, not expecting to make any , comprised of innovative, can-do directorial fervor, bravely naked (both literally and emotionally) acting, and yes, challenging, material that will provoke a variety of reactions from the audience, from repulsion, attraction, discomfort, admiration, inspiration. &lt;a onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernando_Arrabal?ref=/theater/2009s-theatrical-treasures');" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernando_Arrabal" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt;Fernando Arrabal&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span style="color:#000000;"&gt; is&lt;/span&gt; a much-acclaimed playwright. Arrabal’s And They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers, a highlight of Mouvement Panique, is specifically about how political prisoners were treated and tortured in Spain during Franco’s dictatorship, but it is written with such vehement emotion that it can be applicable to any time period and any geographic location where human rights violations occur and authoritarian governments prevail. What makes it more than a political diatribe (and it is a very heavy-handed diatribe at that, to be honest) though is Arrabal’s masterful interweaving of the prisoners’ dreams, which become more surreal, nightmarish, and grotesque as the night wears on, dreams that are also provocative attacks against Spanish socio-cultural institutions. Well, I think the brave and smart young director Nathan Robbel has found the right ways to draw, rivet, and provoke his audience without pushing them out screaming down four flights of stairs and onto the train tracks. He creates a highly-atmospheric staging, incorporating heavy curtains, incense, sound effects, candlelight, truly innovative flashlight-driven lighting design, a minimum of props which highlight the rawness of the performance space, which consequently evoke the rawness and squalor of prison cells. He draws committed, no-holds-barred performances from a strong, young cast who not only has to convey the emotional terror, suffering, and sense of injustice of the prisoners, but also has to make the sometimes baffling, sometimes stomach-churning dreams come to vivid life (by squealing like farm animals, or appearing as a pissy, in all senses of the word, or getting horsewhipped, or simulating oral sex with a gigantic prosthetic, among others). He paces the show well, jarring us from our complacency as we watch the surreal dreams acted out by swiftly cutting to another scene of realistic torture or cruelty, and stages scenes in all corners of the black box, playing with our expectations of visual focus and sightlines. It is a play that demands a lot from the audience, both from Arrabal beating you on the head with the politics, but also with the interconnections of the imagery that you have to make, but Robbel makes it an enthralling night of theater... I’m now a new fan of the Right Brain Project , and I really look forward to seeing some more of their work, and Robbel’s work in particular. This is the kind of Chicago storefront production that I, as a theater-savvy, culturally-broadminded audience member, would like to champion and advocate for, not the numerous safe re-treads that some of this city’s avowed storefront theaters seemingly have settled themselves into . Basada en la pieza "El gran ceremonial" y la novela de carácter autobiográfico "Baal Babilonia", el montaje busca explorar en la memoria y rescatar tres personajes en la obra del autor: la madre opresora (interpretada por&lt;strong&gt; Mabel Farías&lt;/strong&gt;), el héroe víctima y victimario (el propio Remedy) y la mujer como alternativa de salvación (&lt;strong&gt;Pamela Villalba&lt;/strong&gt;, también en "CerroAlegre"). Todos situados en la marginalidad de la sociedad y la cordura, y presentados por una narración que, si bien rescata algunos aspectos del Teatro Pánico, persigue identidad propia al combinar buenas dosis de suspenso y juego de polos opuestos. Los empecé a trabajar, a apretar, hasta dejar el corazoncito que a mí me interesaba: El tema del amor y la imposibilidad de amar sanamente. Ese es un hito que me remueve, me hace reconocerme, analizarme ... ¿Qué papel juega la madre?... Bueno, básicamente estoy hablando de la madre de Arrabal. Para mí ella representa un cúmulo de ideas insertas en lo que fue la Guerra Civil española. Por lo tanto, el otro personaje que está, sin estar, es la imagen del padre ausente. Just four years later, another general— Francisco Franco— usurped Spain’s socialistic Popular Front, transforming the country into an arguably fascistic Catholic monarchy. .. but he nonetheless found good friends and allies in both Mussolini and Hitler.&lt;br /&gt;This history seems at first like crucial context for Car Cemetery, a play whose avant-garde aesthetic is so distinctly “of its time” Arrabal was intent on deconstructing a realist aesthetic that didn’t quite capture reality as it stood after the horrors of World War II.  His employment of the character Milos, in particular—a totalitarian overseer of the car cemetery— indicates an interest in how brutally people wield power when given any glimmer of opportunity. Los actores &lt;strong&gt;Carlos Sobera y Silvia Marsó&lt;/strong&gt; leen una obra inédita  de Fernando Arrabal durante la inauguración del &lt;strong&gt;I Salón del Libro Teatral&lt;/strong&gt; Español e Iberoamericano.Bajo el lema "El teatro también se lee... en el metro". A partir de hoy en la estación de Nuevos Ministerios, gracias a la décima versión del Salón Internacional del Libro Teatral, organizada por la &lt;strong&gt;Asociación de Autores de Teatro&lt;/strong&gt;. Durante la presentación, el presidente de la Asociación de Autores de Teatro, &lt;strong&gt;Jesús Campos&lt;/strong&gt;, ha asegurado que el objetivo del salón es "acercar al público a los textos teatrales" y "fomentar la lectura de obras de teatro". Como actividad paralela se celebrará un concurso de escritura rápida llamado "Teatro exprés", en el que los participantes tendrán tres horas para escribir un texto teatral. Con motivo del cuarto centenario de la publicación de "El arte de hacer comedias en este tiempo", del poeta Félix Lope de Vega. La obra se representa  en la sala Imanol Larzabal en el barrio donostiarra de El Antiguo...El dramaturgo iconoclasta Fernando Arrabal escribió en 1959 su versión de Gernika. En la obra de Arrabal, un matrimonio mayor queda atrapado en su casa por el bombardeo. In this vast derelict space, that was previously a prison before its incarnation as an abattoir, 40 artists are exhibiting works. The term 'panic' is used here in reference to the  Panic Movement (Mouvement Panique), a collective of artists (&lt;strong&gt;Fernando Arrabal, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Roland Topor&lt;/strong&gt;) that formed in Paris in 1962. The name comes from the Greek God Pan - best known for his association with sexuality and prowess. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Fernando Arrabal's 'Panic Manifesto'&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;br /&gt; The exhibition opening night started with a 3 hour 'panic' where a collection of exhibiting artists created the work that will stand for the entirety of the exhibition. The dynamic and spontaneous style of the exhibition means that you could walk in on a music video, a photo shoot or a live installation...&lt;br /&gt;It's all very strange but captivating all the same. El autor llegarà a México el 8 de febrero de 2010. Fernando Arrabal aprovecharà su semanita en el Distrito Federal para pronunciar conferencias y mantener actividades relacionadas con su teatro y sus siete largo-metrajes.  &lt;br /&gt;El director mexicano &lt;strong&gt;Manuel Agustín  Meza&lt;/strong&gt; toma de referencia e inspiración el lenguaje escénico para preparar el montaje: "Confieso que no conocía a Arrabal, sólo había escuchado hablar de él, pero cuando leí su trabajo me fascinó... con un lenguaje delirante y diálogos inteligentes", dijo. Meza y los integrantes de su compañía independiente &lt;strong&gt;El Ghetto&lt;/strong&gt; (fundada en 1994)[la palabra arrabal también significa ghetto], han estado sumergidos en un intenso trabajo de investigación, tanto documental como de campo, para ir conformando el montaje.   "...hemos realizado un proceso de investigación, de entrenamiento y análisis ..." Los actores han visitado algunas zonas, como Tepito, para experimentar viajes que les permitan enriquecer el trabajo.  A lo anterior se suma su acercamiento a toda clase de disciplinas artísticas tales como la danza, la música o el cine.  "Todo esto nos está sirviendo para alimentarnos y  contarlas como si fueran cuentos de niños. Pareciera que sus propuestas son para los pequeños por la ternura que los invade. Hay un universo infantil en sus obras que me fascina, porque también están impregnadas de algo oscuro", afirmó. Debido a ese contexto, Meza y su grupo han recurrido a cintas como "El tambor de hojalata" y "Alicia en el país de las maravillas", lo mismo que a "Las mil y una noches".  "Tomé la estructura, que es el de las cajas chinas, es decir, que dentro de una historia hay otra historia, y dentro de esa otra más, y así sucesivamente se van desencadenando", comentó. Los personajes principales, para poder comer durante su viaje, tendrán que contarle historias a un cocinero. El director explicó que "Fando y Lis" es el espejo de la relación entre un hombre y una mujer, donde se reflejan todos los lados de una relación amorosa, desde la ternura hasta los celos enfermizos. Es una pareja que busca la ciudad encantada de Tar, donde el éxtasis puede, supuestamente, ser encontrado. El es impotente y ella paralítica. Juntos viajan por un paraje rocoso, con la única compañía de tres personajes diversos, como los llamados "Hombres del paraguas negro", que metafóricamente representan a la humanidad, a la política y a la contrariedad del ser humano. A pesar de haber sido escrita en los años 50, el espectador se encontrará con muchos elementos que son característicos de las parejas hoy. Sobre el mensaje final, Meza dice: "es desolador, porque nos dice que estamos matando al amor". Tanto los actores como el público compartirán un espacio de ocho por ochos metros. Los espectadores serán sentados en cojines sobre un enorme tapete árabe haciendo una espiral. El único elemento será un torniquete clásico de los años 50. Raúl Cortés organiza "Dramaturgias Disidentes", una serie de conferencias con dramaturgos. Este año, contamos con personalidades como  el maestro Eugenio Barba. Me atrae tanto esta obra porque veo en estos personajes deformes y traumados seres humanos con sus defectos y virtudes.El tema que deseo transmitir es al límite que podemos llegar cuando nos sentimos solos. A todos los personajes de la obra creo que les invade la soledad. Me interesa porque la realidad social que observo es un mundo solitario en el que la gente esta perdiendo la capacidad de comunicarse (tal y como Cavanosa).Podría seguir horas y horas escribiendo sobre mi planteamiento acerca de esta obra de arte.
